Job Descriptions and Relevant Qualifications of Key Staff

T. Powell Gaines, President and owner of Tifton Physical Soil Testing Lab, Inc.  In charge of overall aspects of running the lab,  responsible for the physical facility, staffing the lab with adequate equipment and qualified personnel; knows all the laboratory procedures conducted in the laboratory; writes up and reviews all of the test reports; serves as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the laboratory; supervises and trains the Technical Manager and Quality Manager.  The President must possess at least a B.S. in Physics, Chemistry, Agronomy, Soil Science, Horticulture, Turf Science, or a closely related science, or have ten years experience in laboratory management or in the turf industry.

B.S. Chemistry 1961, University of Georgia; Retired Research Chemist for University of Georgia Coastal Plain Experiment Station, 1965-1991; Laboratory Director of Tobacco Analytical Chemistry Laboratory, UGA Coastal Plain Experiment Station, 1965-1976; Laboratory Director of Soil and Plant Analysis Laboratory, UGA Coastal Plain Experiment Station, 1976-1991; Published over 190 scientific publications with 95 co-authors; Developed and published 32 chemical methods for soil and plant analysis; Received over 2,000 reprint requests from over 100 foreign countries for copies of publications; Founded Tifton Physical Soil Testing Laboratory, Inc. in 1982 that specializes in testing materials that meet United States Golf Association (USGA) recommendations for golf green construction and developing rootzone mixes for sports turf; Certified Professional Chemist, 1984; Fellow in the Association of Official Analytical Chemists; Fellow in the American Institute of Chemists; Listed in Who's Who in the South and Southwest,  Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in Georgia, American Men and Women of Sciences; served on the Review Board and offered much technical expertise to the USGA in writing the 1993 revision of the USGA Green Construction Recommendations.

S. Hope Mullis, Technical Manager, In charge of the daily activities of running the lab.  The Technical Manager knows how to perform all of the tests conducted in the lab.  The Technical Manager of the laboratory must possess at least a B.S. degree in agronomy, horticulture, soil science or a closely related science, or have at least 10 years experience in the turf testing industry.

Quality Manager, In charge of the Management System and its implementation and review.

Professional Qualifications

B.S. Environmental Geography, 2000, Valdosta State University.  Minor in Geology, 2000, Valdosta State University; Dean's List, Member Gamma Theta Upsilon, Lambda Alpha Chapter (International Geographical Honor Society), Member and Treasurer Geoscience Student Society (Environmental Club, Valdosta State University), Member Georgia Geological Society; Particpant in environmental volunteer activities, educational activities, and research field trips; HOPE scholarship recipient; developed laboratory skills through numerous lab oriented courses; Lab Assistant to Valdosta State University Geology course, in charge of preparing lab materials and helping students with assignments; Computer Lab Assistant for Western Kentucky University Meteorology course, in charge of helping students with assignments and grading lab exercises.

Cynthia Saunders, Office Manager, In charge of running the office.  The Office Manager should have at least a 2 year college degree and preferably a 4 year college degree or at least 5 years experience in office management.

Professional Qualifications

Work experience as a Secretary and Administrative Assistant for many years in the Federal Government and Private Sector. Knowledgeable in public relations, office management, accounting, and bookkeeping. Has exceptional relationship skills with customers on the telephone and in person. Proficient in all types of office equipment, including knowledge of computer programs and software. Can work independently and without direct supervision.
